Much like you see an optometrist for your eyes and a
dentist for your teeth, you should seek care from a specialist for your
feet. The practice of Chiropody is the assessment of the foot and the
treatment and prevention of diseases, disorders and dysfunctions of the foot
by therapeutic, Orthotic, palliative and surgical means. Practitioners in this field are known as
Chiropodists and are
recognized by the initials D.Ch. after their name. Some Chiropodists may perform subcutaneous
soft-tissue foot surgery based on their level of training. We are regulated
under the Chiropody act 1991, and are licensed by the College of
Chiropodists of Ontario. As Registered Foot Specialists we are recognized
as an integral member of the health care team.
As primary care providers, one can access our
services directly. Although many patients are referred by their physician or
another health care provider a referral is not necessary.
Chiropodists undertake a
specialized intensive program of study that covers topics in
anatomy and physiology, pathology, podiatric medicine, biomechanics, pharmacology,
anesthesiology, dermatology, sports medicine,
microbiology, physical therapy, peadiatrics,
orthotics, medicine and surgery.
